Disability Awareness Training


At Ability Focus we passionately believe that for disability awareness training to have a genuine and meaningful impact, it should always be delivered through live training format, with an instructor delivering learning to participants. This instructor led training style encourages continuous interaction, Q&A sessions and involves interactive tasks. Our commitment to live online instructor led training is the core on which Ability Focus has established itself and is what distinguishes our programmes from many others.

Because we are an accredited training provider and our training programmes are certified, private sector companies who provide disability awareness training for their employees are eligible to apply for grant assistance under the Disability Awareness Support Scheme (DASS). This grant aid can cover up to 90% of the cost of the training.

This Disability Awareness training programme gives a comprehensive overview of Disability Awareness through a live online learning platform. Programme delivery is through four x 1-hour fully interactive training sessions.

This industry leading programme has received an Endorsement Award from the IITD for excellence, best practice and innovation in learning & development, ensuring participants are delivered a training programme which has been externally reviewed and validated. It has also been independently CPD certified and accredited.

The programme aims to address myths and misconceptions that employers and employees may have around disability while enhancing knowledge of Ireland’s most diverse group. Topics covered include:

• Statistics relating to disability
• Diversity within disability
• Myths and assumptions around disability
• History of disability in Ireland
• Legislation and its relevance to disability
• Disability etiquette
• Barriers for people with disabilities
• Accessibility
• Discrimination and bias
• Creating an inclusive society
• Reasonable Accommodation and its relevance to employers.

On completion of this programme participants will have a strong foundation in understanding Disability Awareness. Participants will also have greater confidence and knowledge when engaging people with disabilities, both as service users and work colleagues.

Because this is a fully certified and accredited programme, private sector businesses will be entitled to apply for grant assistance under the Disability Awareness Support Scheme (DASS). This scheme covers up to 90% of the cost of training.

Our Live Online Disability Awareness Training Programme is open to members of the public and is delivered at set dates each month. This IITD endorsed, CPD accredited programme is aimed at individuals within organisations who have a specific interest in this type of training.

This training programme is delivered throughout the year and is ideal for Management, Disability Liaison Officers, Access Officers, HR professionals or anyone with an interest in increasing personal or professional awareness of disability.

While some organisations cannot commit to disability awareness training for significant numbers of employees, other businesses may simply have one or two staff members who have an interest in this type of training. This service offering delivers our award winning, IITD endorsed disability awareness training programme to individuals and small groups.

At Ability Focus we recognise that not all organisations can commit to a 4-hour disability awareness training programme. We therefore customise disability awareness training programmes to suit the time requirements of client organisations.

We regularly delivery 1-hour 'Introduction to Disability Awareness' programmes and alternative programmes with specific areas of focus.

We also adapt and deliver customised disability awareness training from 1.5 hour programmes to 3.5 hour programmes. We discuss the requirements and particular areas of interest for clients and format an original programme.

As well as our Online Group Training Format, programmes are delivered via our Online Webinar platform. This ensures delivery to larger groups of participants.

This is the first ever Reasonable Accommodation training programme in Ireland which aims to inform participants about the important topic of ensuring best practice employment and service supports for people with disabilities.

Areas of focus during the training programme include:

• Definition of reasonable accommodation
• Irish and European legislation
• Substantive & procedural obligations
• Disproportionate burden
• Reasonable accommodation during the recruitment process
• Reasonable accommodation for new employees
• Reasonable Accommodation Policies & Passports
• Case law review

This programme is aimed at business owners, managers, disability liaison officers, HR professionals, recruiters and access teams. Delivery is via Zoom over 2 and a half hours with a 15-minute comfort break.

Government Grant Aid for Private Sector Businesses

Private sector companies who provide Disability Awareness training for their employees may be eligible for grant assistance. This can cover up to 90% of the cost of the training. This grant is funded under The Department of Social Protection and Employment Affairs and is known as the Disability Awareness Support Scheme (DASS). This grant does not apply to publicly funded organisations. Further information can be found on our links page.

At Ability Focus we want to create a workspace where people are not disabled by their working environment. Through our employer supports service we provide the following:

Reasonable Accommodation Supports

We provide reasonable accommodation supports and advice to businesses, access teams, HR professionals and line managers who have recruited a staff member with a disability, or have staff returning to work after acquiring a disability or long-term illness. Our aim is to ensure best practice procedures are followed, ensuring a positive workplace environment for valued employees.

We work with organisations to develop Reasonable Accommodation Policies, and advise on the implementation of effective Reasonable Accommodation Passports.
